If you are anything like me, you often buy a package of bagels only to have them go a bit stale before you can eat them all. I love it when I can use leftovers or things a bit past their prime, and these bagel chips are a favorite.
I love making bagel chips because I can control the flavor and the salt. You can make them with any kind of bagel, making them savory for dips such as salsa, spinach dip, chive cream cheese dip, or hot cheese dip, or you can make them sweet to serve with fluffs or lemon curd.
They are much tastier and more economical than store-bought bagel chips, and you don’t have to worry about buying a bag containing mostly crumbs.
If you don’t have any old bagels, you can make them with fresh bagels, they will take an extra few minutes to fully crisp up.
Homemade bagel chips are also a great substitute for croutons in salads or soups, and a batch will stay well in an airtight container for about two weeks.
Ingredients & Substitutions
For a full list of ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Bagels – You can use any type of bagel you like. Plain bagels work fine, but you can use anything; poppy seed, sesame, and everything bagels are great for savory chips. You could try blueberry bagels or cinnamon sugar bagels for sweet bagel chips.
Olive oil – Olive oil helps the seasonings stick to the bagel slices and makes them crispy. You can substitute this with other oils such as canola oil or avocado oil if you prefer.
Seasonings – There is no end to the combination of seasonings you can use for your crispy bagel chips. This recipe combines onion, garlic powder, dried parsley, and kosher salt.
However, you can add chili powder, Italian seasoning, all-purpose seasoning, or ranch seasoning powder. They would also be delicious with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. You can use sea salt or garlic salt if you don’t have kosher salt.
Step by Step Instructions
Begin by slicing the bagel into small rounds. Place the bagel on a cutting board, and with a serrated knife, cut the bagel in half across the hole, then cut it into thin slices. You are aiming for slices ¼ to ½ inch thick.
You can do thick slices if you prefer, but they will take longer to back and may not fully crisp.
Place the bagel slices into a large bowl, add olive oil, and toss to coat.
Add the seasonings and toss again to ensure all the bagel chip pieces are well seasoned.
How to Bake Bagel Crisps
Spread the seasoned sliced bagels in a single layer on an ungreased baking sheet. For easy cleanup, you can line the baking sheet with parchment paper.
Bake the bagel chips for approximately 20 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the bagel pieces are crispy and golden brown.
Remove them from the oven and turn them onto a wire cooling rack. You can move them to an airtight container or ziplock bag for storage when they have cooled completely.
Air Fryer Bagel Chips
Place the bagel chips in a single layer in the air fryer basket or tray.
Set the air fryer to 350°F for five minutes. Shake the basket halfway through.
After 5 minutes, check on the chips, they should be golden and crispy. If they still feel soft, add a minute to the cooking time until they are crisp.
Turn the crisps onto a wire cooling rack. Once they are cool, transfer them to an airtight container or ziplock bag for storage.
Top Tips & Tricks
- Ensure the bagel chips have fully cooled before storing, or the heat will cause moisture to form, softening the chips and causing them to spoil faster.
- Keep an eye on them while baking or air frying; depending on how fresh the bagels are, the seasoning you use, and how thick you slice them, they may brown more quickly than expected.
Food Safety and Storage
Homemade bagel chips can be stored in an airtight container or ziplock bag at room temperature for about two weeks.
