You don’t need to worry about running to the store for supplies because you can use any bread you have on hand, and the butter is made with simple pantry ingredients.

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this homemade garlic bread.
French bread – I like using french bread because it is soft yet crusty, and you can get a loaf of fresh bread pretty cheap. But you can really use any bread you like; Italian loaf, baguettes, sourdough bread, and even hamburger buns will work.
Butter – I like salted butter when making garlic bread as it will give it just a bit more flavour. You can use unsalted if you prefer. Margarine will work just fine too.
Granulated garlic – I use granulated garlic or garlic powder (not garlic salt) when making my garlic bread, as it has great flavour without being overpowering. You are welcome to use fresh garlic instead.
Dried parsley – Dried parsley gives the garlic butter a subtle herb flavour and adds a bit of colour. If you don’t have any, you can simply omit it.
Parmesan cheese – This salty cheese is a delicious addition to garlic bread. I use grated parmesan, but you can use fresh as well.
Step by Step Instructions
Begin by slicing the bread in half lengthwise, then slice it in half crosswise to open it up.
Pro Tip: How you slice the bread will depend a bit on the size and shape of your air fryer basket. You may be able to slice it in half, or you may have to slice it into three or four pieces. Just do what works for you.
Mix the butter, garlic, parsley, and parmesan cheese in a small bowl until well combined.
Spread the garlic butter over each half of the bread, making sure to get right to the edge.
Then, use a sharp knife to slice the bread into the desired portion sizes.
Place the sliced bread into the air fryer basket in a single layer.
Set the air fryer to 350°F and cook the bread for 4-6 minutes until the butter is melted and the bread is slightly toasted.
Pro Tip: Slicing the bread into portion sizes before you air fry will allow all of the sides to get slightly toasted. It is also easier to slice it when it is soft as after it is toasted, it will tend to crumble as you slice it.
Substitutions & Variations
There are many ways to customise your garlic bread to suit your tastes or work with what you have.
Bread– We like French bread because it is easy to find, relatively cheap, and has a great texture, but you can use anything you like. Some of our favourites are sourdough bread, French baguettes, and focaccia bread.
Butter – You can use any butter you like; make sure it is soft to spread it on the bread without tearing it. Salted or unsalted butter is fine, and if you are vegan, then any vegan butter or margarine will work.
Garlic – If you don’t have granulated garlic, you can use garlic powder instead. For a stronger flavour, you can use fresh if you like. We also like to make garlic bread with roasted garlic, and it is super easy to make your own roasted garlic in the air fryer. Seasoning blends such as herbs and garlic work well, too; just watch the salt content, as it can make the bread too salty.
Cheese – While we love grated parmesan cheese because it is easy to mix into the garlic butter and spread on the bread, you can use any cheese you like. Instead of mixing the cheese into the butter, add your favourite shredded cheese to the top of the bread; parmesan, asiago, and mozzarella are all delicious choices.
Serving Suggestions
Garlic bread goes well with almost everything.
You can never go wrong serving it with a big bowl of pasta, especially dishes like lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs. Or a nice big salad, such as Chicken Caesar Salad.
It is also a nice side dish to serve with homemade soup, such as instant pot cauliflower soup or instant pot tomato gnocchi soup. The crusty, toasted bread is perfect for dipping in a creamy bowl of soup.
Garlic bread is also nice alongside something as simple as air-fried pork chops or air-fried chicken drumsticks.

You can freeze garlic bread. You can freeze it either before or after cooking. Simply wrap the bread tightly in tinfoil before freezing. It will keep for several months.
