Why you’ll love Ferrero Rocher Poke Cake:
Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Poke Cake is a rich chocolate cake filled with fudgy Nutella hazelnut spread and finished with a topping of Cool Whip and chocolate pudding. It is then decorated with chocolate sauce, chopped or ground hazelnuts, and Ferrero Rocher candy.
Unlike many other Nutella-filled poke cakes, this one is made without the addition of sweetened condensed milk. Instead, the hazelnut chocolate spread is melted and poured into the holes. When it cools, it firms up and creates little, fudgy pockets within the cake.
This decadent poke cake recipe is light in texture but rich in flavor.
This cake can be served as is or alongside chocolate or vanilla ice cream, drizzled with chocolate or caramel sauce, or topped with chocolate chips, whole hazelnuts, and whole or chopped Ferrero Rocher Candies.
Because this cake is made in a 9×13 pan, it is easy to transport, cut, and serve, and one cake can be made anywhere from 12-16 servings, which makes it the perfect dessert for serving at birthday parties or other gatherings.
Top Tips & Tricks
- When poking holes in the cake, make sure they are large enough to allow the thick Nutella to fill them. You want larger holes than the traditional poke cake filled with jello.
- Let the cake rest in the fridge for about one hour prior to serving in order to allow the filling and topping to firm up, making it easier to slice.

Ingredients & Substitutions for Nutella Poke Cake
For a full list of ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Chocolate Cake Mix (and ingredients to make cake) – You will need one box of chocolate cake mix to make a 9×13 cake. If you don’t want quite as much chocolate, you can use white or yellow cake instead. If you prefer to skip the box mix, you can use your favorite homemade chocolate cake.
Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix – You need one box of instant chocolate pudding. This will be mixed with Cool Whip to make the whipped chocolate frosting.
Frozen Whipped Topping – This creates a creamy, light frosting. For something different, you can use fresh whipped cream, your favorite Nutella buttercream, or chocolate ganache. Or you can keep it simple and use a prepared chocolate frosting.
Nutella – Nutella is a thick and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread. This is going to give the cake the fudgy chocolate hazelnut pockets.
Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Balls – It wouldn’t be Ferrero Rocher cake without Ferrero Rocher! You will want one chocolate ball per serving.
Step by Step Instructions
- Mix the cake, pour the cake batter into a prepared nine-by-thirteen baking pan, and bake according to the package directions.
- Let the cake cool fully.
- Use the end of a wooden spoon or the wide end of a chopstick to poke holes all over the baked cake, ensuring they are large enough to accommodate the thick chocolate hazelnut sauce.
- Heat the sauce in the microwave, and pour over the cake to fill the holes.
- Mix the chocolate pudding with the milk, then fold into the whipped topping.
- Spread the cream frosting over the cake.
- Decorate with chocolate syrup, chopped nuts, and Ferrero Rocher balls.
Pro Tip – You may not need all of the chocolate cream frosting. You can save the remaining frosting to serve with the sliced cake.

Because of everything in this cake, you may want to serve it just as it is.
However, if you want to serve it with something, you can never go wrong with ice cream. Vanilla or chocolate ice cream would go great with this recipe, or you can whip up a batch of easy no-churn oreo ice cream.
We often serve this cake with extra chocolate topping, whole or chopped hazelnuts, chocolate syrup, or homemade butterscotch sauce. Of course, extra Ferrero Rocher candy is a great choice, too.
