Instant Pot Long Grain Rice

Perfectly cooked, fluffy long-grain rice is quick and easy using the instant pot. No need to worry about watching the stove or water boiling over, just add the ingredients to the instant pot, set the timer, and walk away. This rice turns out perfect every time and leaves the stovetop free for the rest of the meal.

If you have had trouble cooking rice in the past then you will love the method of cooking rice in the instant pot.

Unlike cooking rice on the stove, cooking rice in the instant pot requires no babysitting the pot to watch for boilovers or burning. You simply add the rice and the water or broth to the pot, close the lid and turn it on.

While I usually cook my rice on the stove-top, using the instant pot is extremely handy when I need a larger quantity or need to free up the stove for other things.

Rice in the instant pot turns out perfectly cooked every time. It is light and fluffy and ready to use as a side dish or an ingredient to other recipes, such as Honey Glazed Smoked Salmon or Lemon Chicken Breasts.

While this isn’t necessarily a time-saving recipe, it is still a convenient method and perfect for when you don’t want to watch a pot or don’t have access to a stove.

Ingredients

You only need two ingredients in order to make rice in the instant pot;

  • Rice – these instructions are for long grain rice. You can use regular long grain white rice, jasmine or basmati. Do not use instant or converted rice as it cooks much quicker and will turn soft and mushy using this method.
  • Water or broth – Water works just fine, but for extra flavour you can use vegetable, chicken or beef broth.

Instructions

Add the rice and water or broth to the inner liner of the instant pot.

Place the lid on the pot, turn it to the seal position, and set the timer for 3 minutes. When the timer is complete let the pot naturally release for 10 minutes, then release the remaining pressure and remove the lid.

Fluff the rice and serve.

You can make a single batch in a 3 quart or a 6 quart instant pot. If you want to double the recipe you should use a 6-quart pot. You do not need to adjust the cooking time when doubling the recipe.

Additional Tips

All instant pots seem to work a bit differently. Some heat faster than others and some pots are more susceptible to the dreaded burn notice.

If you have had problems with burn notice in your instant pot in the past I recommend either spraying the bottom of the pot with non-stick spray or coating it with a small amount of oil before adding the rice and water. This will help keep the rice from sticking and should help prevent the burn notice.

Serving Suggestions

Long grain rice can be made to serve as a side dish as is, or you can make a pot of rice to use in any recipe that calls for cooked rice.

We often serve simple, white rice with air-fried pork chops or simple air-fried chicken drumsticks.

You can also use this method to make a pot of rice to add to soups, stews, or casseroles.

FAQS

Why is my instant pot not coming to pressure?

If your pot is not coming to pressure during this recipe you will want to make sure the inner ring is installed properly and that you have turned your valve to the seal position.

Other reasons could be that there is something stuck in the rim of the instant pot, or the vent is not seated firmly in the lid.

Why am I getting a burn notice on my instant pot?

This recipe should not give you a burn notice. However, some pots seem to be more sensitive to the burn notice than others. If you get the burn notice, first make sure you added the full amount of liquid as indicated in the recipe. You can also try spraying the bottom of the pot with non-stick spray or coating it with a small amount of oil before adding the rice and liquid. This should prevent sticking and hopefully reduce the chance of the burn notice.

  • Place the lid on the pot and turn the vent to the seal position. Set the timer for 3 minutes on high pressure. When the timer is complete, let the pot naturally release for 10 minutes, then turn the vent and release the remaining pressure.
  • Remove the lid from the pot and stir the rice to fluff it.
  • Serve as desired.

Notes

You can use either a 3-quart or 6-quart instant pot for this recipe.  If you want to double the recipe you will need to use a 6-quart instant pot.  Cook time will remain the same.
This recipe is for traditional long-grain white rice such as basmati or jasmine.  It has not been tested with brown or wild rice.  Do not use minute rice!
