Ingredients & Substitutions

Butter: This recipe is best when it’s made with real butter. You can use salted or unsalted, but salted butter will help to bring out the flavors. Make sure the butter is softened before you start, which will help it mix with the other ingredients.
Honey: Honey adds a beautiful sweetness that pairs well with the cinnamon and brown sugar, and helps smooth the butter and make it more spreadable. If you don’t like honey you could try replacing it with maple syrup, or simply leave it out and add more brown sugar.
Brown sugar: Brown sugar adds most of the sweetness to this butter and provides an extra flavour from the molasses. You can use either dark or light brown sugar, with dark brown giving a richer flavor.
Cinnamon: This gives the butter its delicious, warm spice. You can change this up easily and add other spices such as cloves, nutmeg or ginger. Or try using spice blends such as apple or pumpkin spice mix.
For added flavors try adding a teaspoon of extract; vanilla, maple or almond extract would all be excellent choices, depending on how you plan to use the butter.
Storing Compound Butter
Prepared compound butter can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks.
This butter freezes well. You can either roll it into a log and wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, or you can store it in a small, airtight container.
When ready to use, simply bring it out of the freezer and let it come to room temperature. Depending on your home’s temperature, this should take a couple of hours.
