Flatbread pizza is a great way to enjoy pizza when you don’t have a lot of time to prep and don’t want to wait for delivery.
Flatbread is the perfect alternative to traditional pizza crust because it produces a thin, crispy crust without the need to wait for it to rise. Using flatbread, you can have homemade pizza on the table in less than 30 minutes.
Naan pizzas are a family favorite because the flatbreads are the perfect size for a personal pizza. Because they are small, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating the whole thing, and its easy for everyone in the family to make their own and add their favorite toppings.
One of our favorite weekend activities includes setting out all of the pizza fixings and letting everyone create their own meal.
The BBQ chicken pizza is always a hit with its tender chicken, crispy bacon, and melted mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
Instead of a tomato pizza sauce, the crust is brushed tangy BBQ sauce. You can use your favorite, making it either sweet and tangy, or spicy.
Of course, it’s easy to change or add to the toppings if you choose. This pizza can be made with regular store-bought pizza sauce or homemade pizza sauce, and you can top it with extra veggies such as peppers or mushrooms.
Ingredients & Substitutions
For a full list of ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Store-bought naan flatbread – I used regular naan in this recipe, but whole wheat naan would also be great. If you don’t have naan, you can use any form of flatbread, such as pita bread or store-bought pizza crust.
Cheese—You can’t go wrong with any cheese. Mozzarella is a good choice because it melts well, but we also like to add cheddar to this pizza. Swiss and Monterey Jack cheese all work well, along with fresh parmesan cheese.
Chicken—This recipe uses pre-cooked chicken. You can use leftover BBQ chicken breasts, Blackened Chicken, shredded rotisserie chicken or pre-cook some chicken in the Instant Pot or slow cooker.
Cooked Bacon – I always have some cooked bacon in the fridge for recipes like this, but you can cook the bacon before you start or buy some pre-cooked bacon if you like. Bacon in the air fryer is a quick way to cook a large batch of bacon without much mess. If you don’t like pork bacon, turkey bacon is another good choice.
Veggies – I like to add thinly sliced red onion to my BBQ chicken pizza. It is also delicious with other veggies such as diced peppers, sliced mushrooms, or tomatoes.
Step by Step Instructions
Place naan flatbreads on a baking sheet and brush the tops with BBQ sauce. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean-up.
Add shredded cheese to the top of each naan bread, and then add the cooked chicken, bacon, and veggies.
Place the pizzas in a preheated oven and bake the pizzas for 8-12 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the edges of the flatbread are golden brown.
Remove from the oven, drizzle with BBQ sauce, and sprinkle with fresh chopped herbs.
Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Pizza
You can easily cook these flatbread pizzas in the air fryer instead of a conventional oven.
While you are assembling the pizzas, preheat the air fryer at 380°F for five minutes.
After the preheat cycle has completed, place the pizza in the air fryer basket.
Set the air fryer to 380°F and cook the pizza for 4-5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown.
If your air fryer does not have a setting for 380°F, reduce the temperature to 375°F. The cook time should remain the same.
Serving Suggestions
This classic pizza makes a great meal on its own, but if you are looking for a more substantial meal, there are a variety of sides that go well with pizza.
We often serve pizza with chicken wings, and this bbq chicken pizza goes exceptionally well with air fryer honey buffalo wings.
If you want a simpler side, you could add some air-fried french fries. Or serve this pizza with a delicious street corn pasta salad.
Storing Leftovers
You can store BBQ chicken pizzas in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Allow the leftover pizza to cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container.
It can be reheated in the microwave. You can also reheat it in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes or an air fryer at 320°F for 3-5 minutes.
