The pomegranate is a fruit, about the size of a grapefruit, with a red husk and a white pulp, which holds hundreds of reddish-purple, juicy seeds.
It is the seeds, or arils, of the pomegranate which are edible and are pressed to give us pomegranate juice.
The flavour of a pomegranate can range from sweet to sour but is generally somewhere in the middle with a slightly sweet yet tangy, bold flavour.
It is this bold flavour that makes pomegranate juice a perfect base for cocktails.
Pomegranates blend especially well with citrus but can also be combined with berries or milder fruit such as apples and pears. You can use it in cocktails with almost any alcohol you choose, and because of its strong flavour a little will go a long way.
You can buy pomegranate juice in almost any grocery store, just be sure you are buying pure pomegranate juice and not a cocktail, or blend, which will be watered down with less expensive fruits, and also reduce the flavour.
If you can find pomegranates on sale and want to juice your own, it will give your drinks exceptional flavour. It is a bit of work to seed and juice a pomegranate, but it is 100% worth it if you have the time and patience.
Pomegranate Cocktails with Vodka
The neutral flavour of vodka makes it an excellent liquor to use when you want to preserve the flavour of the other ingredients. The neutral grain alcohol allows the flavour of the pomegranate to shine through in these pomegranate martinis, Moscow mules, and pomegranate lime spritzers.

Cocktail Shaker – A good cocktail shaker is a must in order to make a nicely chilled drink. Stainless steel is a popular choice as the metal helps to chill the beverage rapidly. However, the outside will get really cold, so if you have sensitive hands, you will want to be sure you hold it with a bar towel. I also love my mason jar cocktail shaker; it has a silicone sleeve, so it keeps your hands from getting cold, and the lid fits on any regular mouth mason jar.
Martini Glasses – A pretty martini glass is a must when making martinis, but they work well for other cocktails as well. They are also nice to have on hand for desserts.
Cocktail Glasses – If you are serving stirred cocktails, or want a drink of a larger size, then you will want some nice cocktail glasses. I have a variety of sizes and shapes but tend to use the 10-12 oz sizes most often. They make a nice size cocktail, are easy to hold and make for a nice presentation.
Cocktail Picks – Cocktail picks are nice to have on hand for adding garnish to the beverage and keeping it from sinking to the bottom. You can buy wooden picks, but it is also nice to have some stainless steel ones, and the bonus is they are reusable.
