Ingredients & Substitutions

For a full list of ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

All purpose flour – You will need all-purpose flour for this recipe. If you like you can substitute part of the all-purpose flour for whole-wheat flour, but this will make the bread heavier and it may not rise quite as much. I don’t recommend replacing the full amount or the bread will be too dry.

Sugar – This recipe uses both granulated sugar and brown sugar. You can use either light or dark brown sugar.

Pumpkin Puree – You want pure pumpkin puree for this recipe. This should not be confused with pumpkin pie filling, which contains extra ingredients such as spices and thickeners.

Vegetable Oil – I use vegetable oil in this recipe, but you can use any neutral-flavoured cooking oil. Canola oil and refined avocado oil are good substitutes. Avoid strong-flavoured oils, such as olive oil, as they will alter the bread’s flavor.

Buttermilk – Buttermilk gives the bread a soft texture and slightly tangy flavor, it also works with the baking soda to give the bread rise. If you don’t have buttermilk, or don’t like the flavor, you can use regular milk and add a teaspoon of lemon juice.

Pumpkin Pie Spice – Pumpkin pie spice is a delicious blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves. It gives pumpkin pie its signature spicy flavor. You can buy this premade in the spice aisle of the grocery store. If you don’t like the flavour profile of pumpkin pie spice, you can make your own blend using any of the spices you do like, or simply use cinnamon. You can also use other spice blends such as apple pie spice.
