Ingredients & Substitutions

For a full list of ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Eggnog: Eggnog brings a creamy, indulgent base to this martini. It adds sweetness and richness. If you’re not a fan of traditional eggnog or want a lighter option, try using almond or oat milk eggnog for a dairy-free version that’s still festive. If you prefer a less sweet drink, you can use half eggnog and half cream or milk to provide a similar texture without as much sugar.

Spiced Rum: Spiced rum adds warmth and complexity to this cocktail, with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and cloves that complement the eggnog. For a slightly different twist, you can substitute with regular rum and add a pinch of ground cinnamon or a splash of vanilla extract to mimic that spiced flavor. Bourbon or brandy are also great alternatives, bringing a slightly richer profile that pairs well with eggnog.

Kahlua: Kahlua gives a boost of flavor and sweetness adding to the espresso flavor. For a stronger coffee presence without the extra sweetness or as much alcohol, you can skip Kahlua and add an extra shot of espresso. Baileys or another cream liqueur could work as a substitute if you want a creamier, more dessert-like martini with more subtle coffee notes.

Espresso: Freshly brewed espresso is essential for a bold coffee taste that stands up to the eggnog’s richness. A good shot of espresso brings depth, cutting through the sweetness for a balanced cocktail. If you don’t have an espresso machine, strong brewed coffee or instant espresso powder dissolved in a small amount of hot water can work as quick substitutes.

EQUIPMENT

While you don’t need anything other than something to shake the cocktail and a couple of glasses, some things will make your cocktail experience more enjoyable.

Cocktail shaker – A cocktail shaker will help you mix your drinks quickly while chilling them. There are many styles to choose from, and you don’t need anything fancy. One of my favorites is a mason jar style shaker, and if you don’t have a proper cocktail shaker, a mason jar with a lid will work too.

Martini glasses – You don’t need anything fancy, but proper martini glasses will make this drink extra pretty. You can use stemmed martini glasses or stemless martini glasses. A short cocktail glass will work fine if you don’t have a martini glass.

Jigger – A jigger will allow you to measure your ingredients precisely. It is small and designed to measure and pour the smaller quantities generally used in cocktails. You can use a small measuring cup or glass if you don’t have a jigger.

Cocktail picks – Cocktail picks are not essential but will allow you to add fun garnishes without falling to the glass’s bottom.

FAQS

Can I make eggnog espresso martinis ahead of time?

For best results, these martinis should be made when you are ready to serve them, if made too far in advance you may find the eggnog separating from the other ingredients.
